Changes in DanceSport Rulebook Announced by USA Dance

On May 4, 2017, Carol Barber, USA Dance DanceSport Secretary, sent the following announcement to all USA Dance Dancesport Athletes:

“The DanceSport Council has finalized the 2017 Rulebook and I wanted to take this opportunity to point out two changes that will affect competitive athletes.

First, we have retracted the rule requiring USA Dance athletes to participate in a National Qualifying Event during the current competition year in order to participate in a WDSF competition held in the United States.

We have also changed how couples can qualify for Nationals – there are now two ways to qualify. Previously, athletes had to place in the top 65% in an event to qualify – we have changed this so that athletes must place in the top 75% in an event. Or couples will automatically be qualified in any event (same proficiency level and age category) that they have danced in more than one NQE, regardless of placement.

How will this work? Let’s look at an example. Joe and Jane Smith are Senior 2 competitors who attend the Gumbo Competition and dance in Silver and Gold Smooth and Standard. They attend the Gumbo and place in the top 75% of competitors in Senior 2 Silver Smooth and Standard, but they do not qualify at the Gold level. They decide to attend the Carolina Fall Classic and dance the same events. They are now qualified in all of their events.

We also want to remind competitors about the new Proficiency Points system that will begin this month at our first NQE, the New England DanceSport Championships. The proficiency point system can be found at http://documents.usadance.org/governance/rules-policies-and-bylaws/.

We wish each and every one of our competitive couples the best of luck at this year’s competitions. Life is better when you dance!
