Membership Requirements for Pro/Am & Teacher/Student Couples.

Both Pro/Am Couples (couples consisting of a Professional and an Amateur Student) and Amateur Teacher/Student Couples (Amateur couples of mixed proficiency in which one partner is instructing the other) are invited to participate in the Competition.

In both Pro/Am Couples and Amateur Teacher/ Student Couples, the Student must be a member of USA Dance or an affiliated organization in another country. Membership by the Student in the Social Adult Dancer ($35.00 per year) or Social Youth Dancer ($10.00) categories, depending on the Student’s age, is sufficient to dance in a Pro/Am or Teacher/ Student couple. If the Student is already an Athlete member, that of course is also sufficient.

Pros dancing only in Pro/Am events do NOT need to be members of USA Dance or any affiliated organization. The Teacher in an Amateur Teacher/Student Couple must be an Athlete member of USA Dance.

If you are a Student dancing in a Pro/Am Couple or a member of a Teacher/Student Couple, you can easily join or renew your membership in USA Dance online, at www.usadance.org/membership. There, you can also print or download copies of your membership card.

A Pro/Am or Teacher/Student couple may not compete together in events for Amateur Couples in this Competition.
A Teacher who is not a Pro or a Student may compete with another Amateur partner as an Amateur Couple. In that case, such Amateur couple must, of course, comply with all of the rules governing Amateur couples and Amateur Events.

Proficiency Levels – For Pro/Am Couples & Teacher/Student Couples.

For Pro/Am Couples and Teacher/ Student Couples, the appropriate Proficiency Levels are determined based upon the Student’s proficiency only. Only the Student will be judged.

Single Dance Events & Multi-Dance Events

For Pro/Am Couples & Teacher/Student Couples, Multi-Dance Events and certain Single Dance Events (comprising together all dances for each Style of Dance) are offered at each of the following Skill or Proficiency Levels:

Syllabus Levels:

  • Pre-Bronze
  • Intermediate Bronze
  • Full Bronze
  • Pre-Silver
  • Intermediate Silver
  • Full Silver
  • Pre-Gold
  • Intermediate Gold
  • Full Gold

Open Levels:

  • Open Bronze
  • Open Silver
  • Open Gold
  • Open Above Gold

In each Style of Dance (Standard, Smooth, Latin, and Rhythm), a Pro/Am couple or a Teacher/Student couple may dance in as many of the offered Single Dance and Multi-Dance Events as they would like in up to FIVE consecutive Syllabus Proficiency Levels and up to TWO consecutive Open Levels of those listed above and in up to TWO consecutive USA Dance Age Categories for which the student is eligible (see Age Classifications further below).

In a Pro/Am couple or a Teacher/Student couple, the appropriate Proficiency Levels for the couple are determined in good faith by the Pro or Teacher and the Student, based on the proficiency and age of the Student only. In Pro/Am events & Teacher/Student events, only the Student will be judged.

Scholarship Events

In addition to the Events offered at the above Skill Levels, Scholarship Events are offered for Pro/Am couples & Teacher/Student couples in each Style of Dance. These include, for each style of Dance: (1) a Syllabus Scholarship Event, comprised of the multi-dance event danced at the Full Gold Level in that Style of Dance, but open to all Syllabus dancers (but not to those dancing Open Gold or above choreography), and (2) an Open Scholarship Event, comprised of the multi-dance event danced at the Championship Level for that Style of Dance, open to all those who dance at Gold or above Gold level.

The Pro/Am & Teacher/Student Scholarship Events are offered for four Age Categories only:
Youth (under 19);     A (19-34);     B (35-54);     and C (55 and older).

In addition to the Single and Multi-Dance Events offered at the Proficiency Levels listed above, a Pro/Am or Teacher/Student Couple may also participate in one** Scholarship Event per Style of Dance for which they qualify***.

** Scholarship Events are limited to one per Student per Style of Dance.

***To qualify for a 4-dance Scholarship Event, a Student must dance in other Events (either Single Dance or Multi-Dance Events) with a total of at least 8 dances of the ones included in the Scholarship Event. To qualify for a 5-dance Scholarship Event, a student must dance in other Events (either Single Dance or Multi-Dance Events) with a total of at least 10 dances of the ones included in the Scholarship Event.

Any Scholarship Event with fewer than 3 couples in it may be consolidated with others, with gender divisions merged into one Event. Prize money may be reduced in Events (or Age Categories) with fewer than 3 couples.

Open Specialty/ Social Dances

In addition to the above Single Dance and Multi-Dance Events and Scholarship Events, Pro/Am Couples & Teacher/Student Couples may also enter into as many of the Open Specialty/ Social Dance Events offered as they would like. Specialty/ Social Dance Events will be offered at the Competition in the following dances: Argentine Tango, Hustle, Salsa, and West Coast Swing. These Events are open to All Ages and All Proficiency Levels.

See Above as to where to find these Open Specialty/ Social Dances in our O2cm Online Registration.

Age Classifications.

Multi-Dance & Single Dance Events Other than Scholarships

Multi-Dance and certain Single Dance Events at the different Proficiency Levels listed above are offered to Pro/Am & Teacher/Student Couples for all the the same USA Dance Age Categories as apply to Amateur Couples. Except in Pro/Am & Teacher/Student Scholarship Events, the same USA Dance Age Classifications as apply to Amateur Couples will also apply for all Pro/Am & Teacher/Student Events – but determined solely on the basis of the Student’s age.

Following is a copy of a chart from the USA Dance Dancesport Rulebook setting forth the Age Classifications under USA Dance Rules, which will apply for our February 9, 2019 Competition, both for Amateur and Pro/Am & Teacher/Student Single Dance and Multi-Dance Events at the Syllabus and Open Levels (but not for Pro/Am & Teacher/ Student Scholarship Events – see further below):

Based on Age of Student (in 2nd Column) Reached in Calendar Year 2019:
(Ignore Column 3 for Pro/Am and Teacher/ Student Events)

USA Dance Age Classifications - 2017a Rulebook

A Pro/Am or Teacher/Student Couple can enter Multi-Dance or Single Dance Events offered in up to two consecutive Age Classifications (listed above) for which the Student qualifies per the USA Dance DanceSport Age Classifications above – based on the ages stated in the second column of the chart above. For Pro/Am and Teacher/Student Couples, the applicable Age Classification is measured by the age that the Student will reach during the Calendar year 2019. The age of the Pro or Teacher is not considered in determining appropriate Age Classification for a Pro/Am or Teacher/Student couple (so column 3 in the chart above can be ignored for Pro/Am and Teacher/ Student events).

Adult and Senior Students may not dance in older Age Classifications than the oldest one for which they qualify, but Seniors may dance down in Age Classifications lower than the oldest one for which they qualify, if they wish. They cannot, however, dance in more than two consecutive Age Classifications.

Preteen I through Youth students may dance in their own Age Classification and one older, not younger.

Pro/Am & Teacher/Student Scholarship Events

For Pro/Am & Teacher/Student Scholarship Events, the Age Categories are different than for other Pro/Am & Teacher/Student Events.

As explained further above, the Pro/Am & Teacher/Student Scholarship Events are offered for four Age Categories:

Youth (under 19);    A (19-34);    B (35-54); and    C (55 and older).

Again, the applicable Age Category for a Pro/Am or Teacher/Student Couple is determined based solely upon the age of the Student.
