Special Rules for Teacher/ Student Events.

The following special Rules of USA Dance, with the proviso referenced below, apply to Teacher/ Student Events:

  1.  A Teacher/Student event consists of a Student and a Teacher. The Teacher may be male or female, regardless of the sex of the Student. At our Competition, the Teacher may be a Pro or an Amateur dancing as a Teacher in a mixed proficiency couple.
  2.  For Teacher/Student events, eligibility is determined by the Student’s age and proficiency level. Only the Student is judged.
  3.  Male and female Students will be judged separately in Teacher/Student events; provided however that, at our Competition, certain Events with fewer than 3 Teacher/ Student couples may be merged and combined, eliminating gender and/or age divisions.
  4.  A Teacher/Student couple may not compete together as a couple in events for Amateur Couples at this Competition. A Teacher who is not a Pro may also dance with a different, Amateur, partner as an Amateur Couple in our Competition. In that case, such Amateur Couple is governed by all the rules regarding Amateur Couples (including the separate Competitor Package fees and deadlines applicable for each person in that Couple).

Membership Requirements for Teacher/ Student Couples.

We invite Teacher/ Student (including Pro/Am) Couples to participate in the Competition if the Student in your couple is a member of USA Dance or similar organization in another country. In this case, membership by the Student in the Social Adult Dancer ($35.00 per year) or Social Youth Dancer ($10.00) categories, depending on your age, is sufficient to dance in a Teacher/ Student couple. If the Student is already an Athlete member, that of course is also sufficient.

If you are a Student dancing in a Teacher/ Student Couple and you reside in the U.S., you can easily join or renew your membership in USA Dance online, at www.usadance.org/membership. There, you can also print or download copies of your membership card.

Pros dancing only in Teacher/ Student (Pro/Am) events do not need to be members of USA Dance or any affiliated organization. A Teacher/ Student couple may not compete together in events for Amateur Couples in this Competition.

A Teacher who is not a Pro may compete with another Amateur partner as an Amateur Couple. In that case, he or she must, of course, be an Athlete Member of USA Dance or affiliated organization for Amateur dancers in another country.

Other Rules, Regulations & Policies.

The Royal Palm Dancesport Competition looks to the Dancesport Rulebook of USA Dance, Inc. as the primary guideline for this Competition. However, as a “Registered” (not “Sanctioned”) Competition of USA Dance, we are not strictly required to follow the Dancesport Rulebook, and certain deviations may be made.

See Competition Rules, Regulations & Policies for more information on our Competition Rules, Regulations & Policies – including more detail on the rules regarding dress code, cancellation policy, and more – for all Couples.

More information on Proficiency Levels and Age Classifications for Teacher/ Student Couples is found below.

Proficiency Levels – For Teacher/ Student Couples.

For Teacher/ Student Couples, the appropriate Proficiency Levels are determined based upon the Student’s proficiency only. Only the Student will be judged.

Single Dance Events & Multi-Dance Events

For Teacher/ Student and Pro/Am Couples, both Multi-Dance Events and certain Single Dance Events are offered for each of the following Skill or Proficiency Levels:

Syllabus Levels:

  • Newcomer*
  • Full Bronze
  • Full Silver
  • Full Gold

Open Levels:

  • Open Bronze
  • Open Silver
  • Open Gold

* Teacher/ Student Couples are eligible to dance in Newcomer events (in which only the first 5 steps in a bronze syllabus are allowed), if the Student has never danced in a ballroom competition before. Students who qualify for Newcomer events may choose to dance ONLY in Newcomer events or in both Newcomer AND Full and Open Bronze Syllabus events.

In each Style of Dance (Standard, Smooth, Latin, and Rhythm), a Teacher/ Student couple can dance in as many of the offered Single Dance and Multi-Dance Events as they would like in up to two consecutive Syllabus Proficiency Levels and up to two consecutive Open Levels of those listed above and up to two consecutive USA Dance Age Categories for which the student is eligible (see Age Classifications further below).

In a Teacher/ Student couple, the appropriate Proficiency Levels for the couple are determined in good faith by the Teacher and the Student, based on the proficiency and age of the Student only. In Teacher/ Student events, only the Student will be judged.

Scholarship Events

In addition to the Events offered at the above Skill Levels, Scholarship Events are offered for Teacher/ Student couples in each Style of Dance. These include, for each style of Dance: (1) a Syllabus Scholarship Event, comprised of the dances danced at the Full Gold Level in that Style of Dance, but open to all Syllabus dancers, and (2) an Open Scholarship Event, comprised of the dances danced at the Championship Level for that Style of Dance, open to all those who dance at Gold or above level.

The Teacher/ Student Scholarship Events are offered for four Age Categories: Youth (under 19); A (19-34); B (35-54); and C (55 and older).

In addition to the Single and Multi-Dance Events offered at the Proficiency Levels listed above, a Teacher/ Student Couple may also participate in one** Scholarship Event per Style of Dance for which they qualify***.

** Scholarship Events are limited to one per Student per Style of Dance.

***To qualify for a 4-dance Scholarship Event, a Student must dance in other Events (either Single Dance or Multi-Dance Events) with a total of at least 8 dances of the ones included in the Scholarship Event. To qualify for a 5-dance Scholarship Event, a student must dance in other Events (either Single Dance or Multi-Dance Events) with a total of at least 10 dances of the ones included in the Scholarship Event.

Any Scholarship Event (or Age Category within a Scholarship Event) with fewer than 3 couples in it may be consolidated with others, with age and/or gender divisions merged into one Event. Prize money may be reduced by 50% in Events (or Age Categories) with fewer than 3 couples.

Open Specialty Dances

In addition to the above Single Dance and Multi-Dance Events and Scholarship Events, Teacher/ Student Couples may also enter into as many of the Open Specialty Dance Events offered as they would like. Specialty Dance Events, open to all ages and all Proficiency Levels, will be offered at the Competition in the following dances: Argentine Tango, Hustle, Salsa, and West Coast Swing.

Age Classifications.

Multi-Dance & Single Dance Events Other than Scholarships

Multi-Dance and certain Single Dance Events at the different Proficiency Levels listed above will be offered to Teacher/ Student Couples in all the the same USA Dance Age Categories as apply to Amateur Couples. Except in Teacher/ Student Scholarship Events, the same USA Dance Age Classifications as apply to Amateur Couples will also apply for all Teacher/ Student Events – but determined solely on the basis of the Student’s age.

Following is a copy of a chart from the USA Dance Dancesport Rulebook setting forth the Age Classifications under USA Dance Rules, which will apply for our January 20, 2018 Competition, both for Amateur and Teacher/ Student Single Dance and Multi-Dance Events at the Syllabus and Open Levels (other than Teacher/ Student Scholarship Events – see further below):

Based on Ages Reached in Calendar Year 2018:

USA Dance Age Classifications - 2017a Rulebook

A Teacher/ Student Couple or a Pro/Am Couple can enter Multi-Dance or Single Dance Events offered in up to two consecutive Age Classifications (listed above) for which the Student qualifies per the USA Dance DanceSport Age Classifications above – based on the ages stated in the second column of the chart above. For Teacher/ Student Couples, the applicable Age Classification is measured by the age that the Student will reach during the Calendar year 2018. The age of the Teacher is not considered in determining appropriate Age Classification for a Teacher/ Student couple.

Adult and Senior Students may not dance in older Age Classifications than the oldest one for which they qualify, but Seniors may dance down in Age Classifications lower than the oldest one for which they qualify, if they wish. They cannot, however, dance in more than two consecutive Age Classifications.

Teacher/ Student Scholarship Events

For Teacher/ Student Scholarship Events, the Age Categories are different. As explained above under “Proficiency Levels – for Teacher/ Student Couples,” Syllabus and Open Teacher/ Student Scholarship Events are offered for four Age Categories: Youth (under 19); A (19-34); B (35-54); and C (55 and older). Again, the applicable Age Category for a Teacher/ Student Couple is determined based solely upon the age of the Student.
